Memphis, TN - JAY ALAN "Skip" HANOVER, 77, loving son of David and Olga Hanover, died peacefully at his home on November 12, 2005 in Memphis, TN from lung cancer. He was a devoted husband to his cherished wife of 55 years., Helen Lerner Hanover; an adoring father of his four children, daughter, Jody Becker and her husband Daniel Becker, and sons, Brad, Barry and John Hanover and his wife Sherry; a loving brother to Kenneth Hanover and his wife Jeannie Hanover; and an unabashedly doting grandfather of Keith, Brett, David, Michael, Brendan, Jacob and Sydney, all of whom survived him. His passing will be deeply mourned by his family, friends, law partners, and clients, all of whose lives have been forever enriched by knowing him. Mr. Hanover, a prominent lawyer, attended high school at Tennessee Military Institute, and earned his Bachelor of Arts degree and Juris Doctorate form Vanderbilt University in 1952, where he was inducted into the honorary societies Phi Beta Kappa and Order of the Coif. He served as an elected member of the Tennessee House of Representatives from 1956 to 1961. Mr. Hanover began his law practice with his late father David and uncle, Joseph Hanover, each distinguished lawyers in Memphis. During his legal career, Mr. Hanover headed the law firm mostly know as Hanover, Walsh, Jalenak & Blair. Mr. Hanover, respected as a zealous advocate and loved as a loyal and committed law partner and mentor to many, was widely known and recognized as a champion of the legal profession, having become both a Master of the American Inns of Court and a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers. Funeral services will be held today, Monday, November 14, 2005, at Temple Israel Cemetery, 1708 Hernando Road in Memphis at 1 p.m. Contributions in his memory should be made to Temple Israel, 1376 Massey Road, Memphis, TN 38120, St. Jude's Cancer Research Hospital, or the charity of donors' choice.
